<note>Today, it is necessary for engineers in a wide range of disciplines and for other nonbiologists by primary training to have a basic background in cell biology. Scientists increasingly work in teams comprised of engineers, scientists of other disciplines, business managers, and technicians. For each member of the team, it is necessary to understand the language of the other members. Scientists not trained in the field of cell biology need to be able to understand cell biology-associated research plans and experimental results to enable them to veto or approve proposed ideas. They must understand the societal and business impact of the research and the costs involved. The objective of this book is to present up-to-date basic cellular and molecular biology in an easily understandable way and to give examples of the manifestations of biological phenomena and of the practical results of research. This book is the first attempt to provide a reference for cell and molecular biology that can be read by engineers and other nonbiologists, and used as a tool to become familiar with the language of biology.</note>
